Interested in working during the school year in the fall or spring semester? Read below for more information.

  • Part-time Work: Part-time off campus (<20 hours per week)
Part-time CPTs during the school year are approved if (a) the student is enrolled in no more than 9 credits, and (b) the student’s GPA is at least 3.2. This ensures that academics are the first priority, ahead of employment. Source: https://my.csc.ncsu.edu/dgp/services-info-for-students/cpts/
CPT is possible for eligible students (concurrent full-time enrollment is required in the Fall and Spring semesters).
It is possible even during enrollment terms to engage simultaneously in both part-time on-campus employment (at a maximum of 20 hours per week) AND part-/full-time CPT off-campus employment, if authorized, as these are two separate types of F-1 employment and therefore subject to different rules and regulations.
In which case, the total amount of employment hours (combining on- and off-campus employment) could exceed 20 per week.

  • Full-time Work: Full-time CPTs during the academic year (essentially involving a leave of absence from school) are unusual,
and require the thesis advisor to certify that the employment is an “integral component” of the student’s thesis. Therefore, CSC students typically CANNOT work full-time during the semester with CPT.
  • Remote Work: IT is permissible for graduate students to work remotely part-time (20 hours or less per week) during the Fall and Spring semesters. However, you must be enrolled as a full-time student (i.e., have a full course load of academic classes) and then request to work as an intern in addition to being a student. You also must take classes in person at NC State; you cannot take only online classes.
