I’m getting a lot of questions these days about what is appropriate attire for events. In general, it’s better to be over dressed than to show up too casually attired.
For many campus events, such as networking sessions or info sessions business casual is acceptable. At our recent career fair & interview panel, the 4 companies all said that students should wear suits to a career fair, while one said business casual is okay too. If some companies are looking for suits at career fairs, then I would wear business attire!
Interviews are the most formal occasion of all, so I would wear business attire UNLESS specifically told otherwise by the employer with whom you are interviewing. It’s important to show the interviewer that you are taking the opportunity to speak with them very seriously, and that you need to prove yourself as a professional to the company.
So, what’s business attire vs. business casual? My Pinterest board on attire gives you some examples: https://www.pinterest.com/ncsucsc/professional-attire/
